Starting With Alice (Thorndike Press Large Print Juvenile Series)
Published in Hardcover by Thorndike Pr (Largeprint) (March, 2003)
Author: Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
Average review score:

Absolutely Great
Starting With Alice was one of the best books I've ever read. I liked the way I felt like I was Alice doing the things she did and feeling the way she felt.
Starting With Alice is a book about an eight-year old girl named Alice McKinley. Alice's mother died when Alice was in kindergarten. Her ears pierced and to have long hair are things Alice realy wants, but most of all she wants a mother.
In third grade Alice moves to Maryland, and can't make any frinds excapt Donald Sheavers a boy who lives next door. Once Alice makes a friend they have to worry about these three girls Alice nicknamed "The Terrible Triplets." Alice also does't want Donalds mother as her mom, who seems to have an eye on Alice's dad.
I think that the middle of the book felt long and it dragged, because the same kinds of things kept happening. This made it kind of predictable.
One of the messages it taght me was not to judge people by the way they look.
I hope this books intrests you now. If it doesn't there are other books in the Alice series that are really good too.

Alice is Awesome!
I loved this book from the first page, when Alice makes out her list of loves "Felt tipped pens, sixty four colors" and hates "Anything with gravy". From that first page, Naylor creates in Alice the little girl that I remember being, the difficulties of moving from the territory of childhood to pre-adolescence, wanting to be accepted but not wanting to change in order to do so.
This is the first of three prequels to Naylor's Alice series that is incredibly popular with YA girls, yet it works well as a stand alone. I have read a few of the other Alice books and they are great, but this is geared for a younger audience. I believe any young girl could empathize with Alice's trials & tribulations, being called into the principal's office for disregarding the cross-walk guard because she has it "in" for you, as well as rejoice with her triumphs, inviting your peer tormentors to a party and having them show up with gifts!
I think this is an excellent book for kids and their parents, who often forget just how difficult it is to be a kid!

I love the Alice Series!
When I first picked up an Alice book, it was for summer reading. I figured that it would probably be another boring book about some girls' life. When I realized who it was written by, I thought it must be somewhat of a good book (since I loved the Shilo books so much). I began to read, and I loved it. I could relate to some of what Alice was thinking and feeling. I never knew I could find a book that I loved so much.
Now, I have collected all of the Alice books and I'm waiting for more. I have even interested my friends in the books. Two went out and bought some of the series, and one just borrows mine. I think Mrs. Naylor should keep up the good work and writing books that I seem to love so much. I also like that Alice is girl about my age growing up in an average, middle class, well brought up family. I think most girls who like Phyllis Reynold Naylor's writing, and enjoy stories they can relate to will definitely enjoy the Alice books.

P.S. If you already have some I hope you get a chance to read the others; that is, since they are so hard to put down!

The Appearance of Impropriety: How the Ethics Wars Have Undermined American Government, Business, and Society
Published in Hardcover by Free Press (September, 1997)
Authors: Peter Morgan and Glenn Reynolds
Average review score:

A succinct explanation of our current political climate
When one reads this book, which presents a plethora of alternatively humorous, irritating and discouraging (sometimes, all at once) examples of what's defective with "appearance politics" in law, science, government and society, one comes away with a much better idea of why American political life is as inane and depressing as it has become in the '90s: it's just the logical development of a long line of struggles in which the vacuum of appearance has triumphed over the meatier and graver substance of reality. This book demands to be read by a wide audience, as it provides an entirely new perspective on some of the more troubling incidents in our recent political and societal history and how we have gotten there. There's probably a post-Clinton Administration sequel awaiting this for Messrs. Morgan and Reynolds to report, or at least, a updated second printing.

A superb analysis of what ails our political system
I really enjoyed this book. It covers a lot of ground: from Augustan age England to scientific scandals involving Nobel laureates. But it remains focused throughout on a common human frailty -- the tendency to deal in appearances rather than reality -- and how catering to that frailty has produced an amazingly screwed-up set of political ethics laws. Since I read the book, I view each scandal headline differently. I recommend it to anyone interested in understanding the convoluted and self-serving mess that goes under the name of "ethics" these days.

The best guide to understanding today's scandal culture.
An excellent and far-reaching guide to the way politicians and interest groups manipulate appearances in the interest of political power and money. The best single guide to understanding today's scandal culture.

Baby Help: True-To-Life Series from Hamilton High (The True-To-Life Series)
Published in Hardcover by Morning Glory Press (December, 1997)
Author: Marilyn Reynolds
Average review score:

A powerfully written fictional treatment
The latest in the "True-to-Life from Hamilton High" series, Marilyn Reynolds' Baby Help is a novel of the nightmare of teen domestic abuse. A young mother doesn't see herself as battered because her boyfriend "only" hits her when he's been drinking... until he starts behaving abusively toward her daughter. That's when she realizes it's time to get out of the relationship - but after she reaches a shelter for battered women, she has second thoughts about leaving, which place her and her daughter's life in mortal jeopardy. Baby Help is a powerfully written fictional treatment of a very real and dangerous issue facing teens today.

Marilyn Reynolds does it again!
I first read Marilyn Reynolds' books when I was working with her son, Matt, at Alhambra High School. I was very impressed with how insightful her writing is. Baby help is no acception. I now recommend her books to my high school students and they all say the same thing - "I couldn't put it down." These books even appeal to reluctant readers because they are so well written. Everyone should read these books!

This really captures a teenagers struggles!!
I read this book and I think that girls in this situation can really relate, but I also think that this book would be good for anyone. I couldn't put this book down!

Barefoot Gen: The Day After
Published in Paperback by New Society Pub (January, 1988)
Authors: Keiji Nakazawa, Dadakai, and Barbara Reynolds
Average review score:

The triumph of the human spirit
Barefoot Gen: The Day After is volume two of a four part series. It tells the story of the day after the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima as seen through the eyes of seven year old Gen Nakaoka. Based on the real-life experiences of the author, Gen, his mother, and his newborn sister face the horrors of the day after the bomb. They have no food or shelter and are surrounded by the dead and dying. Even the soldiers sent in to gather and burn the dead bodies are succumbing to the radiation sickness and dying. No one understands what is happening and there is no one to turn to. Gen goes in search of food for his mother whose breast milk has dried up from malnutrition. Alone he faces the horror of the devastation and the destitution of the people of Hiroshima. This the hardest of the four books to read because the carnage of the day after the bomb is almost beyond belief. Gen's compassion, humanity, and determination makes this an inspiring book about the strength of the human spirit. Although the graphic scenes may turn some people off, this is still an important book for its message on the dangers of nuclear war.

The work has been wonderfully translated from the Japanese original: Hadashi no Gen. It was originally published in serial form in 1972 and 1973 in Shukan Shonen Jampu, the largest weekly comic magazine in Japan, with a circulation of over two million. The drawings are all in black and white. This US edition was published as part of a movement to translate the book into other languages and spread its message. It is a wonderful testimony to the strength of the human spirit and the horrors of nuclear war. There are a few introductory essays at the front of the book that help to put this book into perspective. It is a powerful and tragic story that I highly recommend for anyone interested in the topic.

Powerful
I stumbled across this graphic novel in a used bookstore, not having any idea the impression it would make on me. This is an incredibly powerful story, very effectively told through the medium of comic art. It is an affirmation of the power of visual media, and an example of how comics can be used for much more than funnies and fantasies. It is also probably the most effective anti-nuclear material I have ever come across.

Can comic books make you cry?
Yes, they can. This is the tale of Gen, a young boy, and his family during the bombing of Hiroshima. The tale begins with his day to day life, and then through the bombings. The illustrations of his brother and pregnant mother dying and in pain are upsetting and fully illustrate the horrors of war.

Beetles Lightly Toasted

I think it is a great book to read
It shows how people will do something crazy just to win a contest this one boy Jack did a crazy thing like putting Hamburgers on his dads engine and Andy Moller is Jack's cousin he was cooking crickets in brownies and giving them to kids at lunch and the kids did not know.I like this book because they will do anything to get something.I think people today are the same way like if you want some candy you ask your mom can you have some money to go and get some candy from the store

Wonderful!
Andy Moller is a typical fifth grader, a great kid with a fantastic sense of humor. Andy's true gift, however, is his unbelievable imagination. Cooking insects as a food source is a great topic to write on. The book is very enjoyable with lots of family humor thrown in. A great read for kids of all ages. Do yourself a favor and get your hands on it soon!

A fifth grade boy wants to use bugs as a future food source.
I think this book is funny and exciting. Andy has a real sense of humor. I like the fact that the world can use bugs as a future food source. Maya Ribot (mmarrero@worldnet.att.net) Boston

Captain, He Bought Eggs: Stories From a Firefighter
Published in Hardcover by The Photo-Documentary Press, Inc (01 October, 2001)
Authors: Beth Reynolds and Carmine Speranza
Average review score:

Excellent book
Bought this for our son who is interested in being a firefighter as his father is and his grandfather was. Great story and even though I thought the pictures would be better they were still good. Wish there were more.

The Best Collaboration Since Green Eggs and Ham
Photojournalist Beth Reynolds depicts the life of Carmine Speranza through breathe-taking photographs that ignite the fire inside of you to become a firefighter. The book represents the life and love of Speranza probably better than he could explain it himself. This nationally recognized book is sweeping the nation, and capturing the hearts of all.

Top notch photodocumentary
If you want to pay a tribute to firefighters, buy this book for the fire station in your neighborhood or for the local library. If you just want a great story and beautiful photography, buy this book for yourself. Frankly, as much as I feel for the families and friends of the firefighters killed in NYC, I've never felt like I knew any of those men and women. Television has done its best to convey the enormity of the tragedy but have left me with a rather two-dimensional image of most firefighters; I know they're heroic but I don't know much more than that. With this book, I feel like I've met a flesh-and-blood fireman.
I'm not sure whether to call this book a documentary with pictures or a book of photographs with text. The photographs could stand on their own as fine art but are the perfect accompaniment with the stories of the life a retired fire chief from Connecticut. There are stories of fires fought, to be sure. But, the best stories are about how Chief Speranza discovered as a child that he wanted to be a firefighter or about what firefighters do when they aren't saving lives or about the friendships that form between men and women who work so closely together. After reading this book, I think I know more about what its like to be a firefighter than I've learned in the last 3 months of non-stop television reporting.
I am a photographer and I bought this book for the beautiful photography but I would recommend it not only to camera lovers but to anyone interested in firefighters, great documentaries, or personal histories. A great read from start to end.

The Caregiver's Guide : Helping Older Friends and Relatives with Health and Safety Concerns
Published in Paperback by Mariner Books (January, 1992)
Authors: Caroline Rob and Janet Drew Reynolds
Average review score:

Absolutely Wonderful!!!
This book is a gem. We have fifteen chapters releasing us from all the fears of dealing with an elderly friend or parent. You need this book! For two very
simple reasons. First, an elderly person's physiology is different from ours.
So this would be like taking care of ET! You need to know their physiology.
Second, you need to know when to take them to the hospital, and when not to.
There's a whole set of variables involved in that too. This is such a wonderful book. I even like the printing inside. It's over 450 pages of data that can change your life. I take care of my diabetic mother who is eighty. She is my spiritual path and
she is destroying my anger, laziness, and desires. I can't afford them! I highly
recommend this book to all those with elderly parents or friends. It's a good and fast
spiritual journey. Don't hesitate! Buy the book!

The Caregiver's Guide
If you ever wished for a very experienced Doctor and / or nurse, with the time to give you all the information you needed, this book is the answer to your prayers. The guide is the culmination of Carolin's interviews with leading doctors, nurses, social workers, and researchers.

A MUST 'keep handy' reference book. The material is understandable and complete. Each chapter deals with a group of related problems. For instance, Chapter 6 is titled "Oh, My Aching Bones'. It covers basic problems through hip replacement and includes "Yes, Basic Problems Have Typical Solutions" and "When Do You Need a Doctor".

I have bought several for friends and recommend it to each caregiver I meet. It offers practical solutions to common problems, safety tips, hands-on care, and most important, how the issues relate to older people.

this is the most helpful book ever written for caregivers
the Dr.Spock of eldercare, this book gives truly helpful information in an easy to read manner. It doesn't patronize the reader in any way and the information is up to date and scientifically based.

CLEAR PICTURES : FIRST LOVES FIRST GUIDES
Published in Hardcover by Scribner (May, 1998)
Author: Reynolds Price
Average review score:

if you are a lover of art, this is wonderful
OK, this is yet another great autobio by a writer that I admire: it displays a fabulous power of memory - one of the traits that Nabokov said was a sign of creativitiy - and is written in a secure and elegant style. Its portraits are sharp and unlike any that I have ever read, leavened with enormous subtlety and humor. This makes it a truly unique read.

Interestingly, not a whole lot happens in this autobio outside of personal growth, ambition, and his father overcoming alcoholism. Instead, the author muses over a rich life that started with an average family. There are deep relationships and a great deal of love, ruminations over the racism and sensitivity of his southern upbringing, and the outlines of his concerns with art. It is a bit annoying that he plays the pronoun game with those he loved: obviously, they were either men or men and women, so why not say it?

If you like a measured and calm set of vivid recollections by an individual of great literary talent, you enjoy this very much. Very very much.

A book to be read and reread.
Reynold's beautiful memoir contains memorable characters that many readers will find perched somewhere in their family tree. The prose pleads to be read aloud.

Small Town, Big City
Reynolds Price was born in North Carolina. He has lived here his whole life, excluding four years in Europe. He is rooted in Southern ways and Southern life. With Clear Pictures, we understand how his rural beginnings shaped the life that he has made. We begin to understand the basis of all the wonderful characters he has shown us.
